China’s Rock

January 2016:

Sitting in our room at the Climber’s Inn in Yangshuo, a couple of days before it is time for me to return home to Colorado, while the others will continue on. I’m not quite ready to leave. It’s been an incredible two weeks of climbing in breathtaking landscape on China’s beautiful limestone, being in a completely new culture, and sharing time with lovely old and new friends. It’s late at night, and we climb tomorrow morning in a very cold Yangshuo. Somehow I am convinced to watch the movie “Gravity”.

Appropriately, it put me in a liminal space. Like this trip put me in a liminal space. Lying there after the film, I remember this phrase from a morning meditation: “The past is nothing more than the trail I have left behind.”

Each moment, disappearing as it arises. This trip, a shift. As if so many layers untangled and shed.

White Mountain crag in Yangshuo resembled a theatrical painting...all the moods...stunning! And so many fun routes to climb, in particular, The Comedians!
